1. Posture: Run Tall and Proud

Your posture is the foundation of your running form. A slouched, hunched-over posture restricts your breathing and puts unnecessary stress on your back and hips.


The Technique: Run tall and proud, as if a string is pulling you up from the crown of your head. Your head should be up, your gaze forward, and your shoulders relaxed and pulled back. Your back should be straight, and you should have a slight forward lean from your ankles, not your waist.



2. Cadence: The Rhythm of Efficiency

Cadence is the number of steps you take per minute (spm). A slow cadence is often associated with overstriding, which is a major cause of running injuries.


The Technique: Aim for a cadence of around 170-180 steps per minute. This may feel fast at first, but a higher cadence encourages you to take shorter, lighter steps and land with your foot underneath your center of gravity. You can use a metronome app or a running watch to help you find the right rhythm.



3. Foot Strike: Land Light, Land Quiet

The debate over heel striking vs. midfoot striking vs. forefoot striking is endless. The truth is, there is no one “correct” foot strike for everyone. What matters most is where your foot lands in relation to your center of gravity.


The Technique: Regardless of which part of your foot hits the ground first, your goal should be to land with your foot underneath your body, not out in front of it. This is called avoiding “overstriding.” A good cue is to think about landing lightly and quietly. If you can hear your feet slapping the pavement, you’re likely overstriding and braking with every step.



4. Arm Swing: The Unsung Hero

Your arms are not just along for the ride. They play a crucial role in balance, rhythm, and power generation. A proper arm swing can make you a more efficient and powerful runner.


The Technique: Your arms should be bent at approximately a 90-degree angle. Your hands should be relaxed (not clenched fists). Your arms should swing forward and backward, not across your body. The swing should be driven from your shoulders, not your elbows. Think “hip to nip” – your hands should swing from your hip up to your nipple level.



Common Form Mistakes and How to Fix Them


Mistake: Looking down at your feet.

Fix: Keep your head up and your gaze fixed on the horizon. This will naturally straighten your posture.


Mistake: Shrugging your shoulders.

Fix: Relax your shoulders and let them drop away from your ears. Shake out your arms periodically to release tension.


Mistake: Swinging your arms across your body.

Fix: Focus on a forward-and-backward arm swing. Imagine you are on a narrow train track and your arms cannot cross the rails.


Mistake: Bouncing up and down (vertical oscillation).

Fix: Think about running forward, not up. A higher cadence will naturally reduce your vertical oscillation.
